Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) is on course for another record year, having already exceeded 60 million passengers in 2015.
According to the latest data from the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA), HKIA handled 62.5m passengers in the first 11 months of the year, up 8.3% compared to the same period in 2014.
This means that the airport is now certain to exceed last year’s record of 63.3m passengers, especially with the festive peak travel season still to come. Flight movements have increased 3.9% year-on-year to 370,610.
In November 2015 alone, HKIA handled 5.6m passengers and 33,980 flights, up 8.8% and 3.2% year-on-year respectively. November’s growth was driven by a 13.0% jump in Hong Kong resident travel and an 8.0% rise in transit traffic.
“As the year draws to an end, we expect to see a travel peak at HKIA during the Christmas and New Year holidays. Over the period, a total of 135 additional flights will be arranged by the airlines to cope with the surge in travel demand, with the most popular destinations being Taipei, Osaka and Sapporo,” said Vivian Cheung, the AA’s deputy director of airport operations.
For the past 12 months (November 2014 to November 2015), HKIA has handled 68.2m passengers and 404,870 flight movements, marking year-on-year growth of 8.3% and 3.9%, respectively.
