HK Express has unveiled plans for a significant expansion of its operations in Japan, with the launch of three new routes.

The Hong Kong-based low-cost carrier currently flies to six Japanese airports, but this will increase by 50% to nine destinations this summer, after the airline launches flights to Ishigaki, Takamatsu and Kagoshima.

“HK Express is responding to our guests by adding destinations considered highly sought-after. Our new flights to these under-served and under-the-radar destinations in Japan will bring much needed tourism and provide a welcome boost to the local economy,” said Andrew Cowen, CEO of HK Express.

“We are especially thrilled to be the first and only airline flying from Hong Kong to Takamatsu and Ishigaki, providing a welcome alternative to the more conventional destinations.”

The expansion will commence on 16 June 2016 with the launch of direct flights between Hong Kong and Ishigaki, which lies in the south of the Okinawa island chain. Flights will operate twice a week, with morning departures every Thursday and Sunday.

Then on 6 July, HK Express will start flying direct from Hong Kong to Takamatsu, a city on the north coast of Shikoku Island, overlooking the Seto Inland Sea. This route will run three times a week, with varying departure times on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays.

And finally on 11 July, the LCC will start operating four weekly flights to Kagoshima on the island of Kyushu, which is nicknamed the “Naples of the East” due to its bay-side setting overlooked by the Sakurajima volcano. Flights will run every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday with varying departure times.

In addition to these new destinations, HK Express is also planning to add a third daily flight to Tokyo Narita Airport on 30 October. The airline operates all its flights using a fleet of all-economy class Airbus A320 aircraft.

As well as Ishigaki, Takamatsu, Kagoshima and Tokyo Narita, HK Express flies to Fukuoka, Hiroshima, Nagoya, Osaka and Tokyo Haneda.
