EVA Air has signed an agreement to help increase the number of North American visitor arrivals to Thailand.

The Taiwanese carrier has penned a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) that will lead to a series of joint marketing initiatives. The aim is to take advantage of EVA’s strong trans-Pacific network, which allows travellers to fly to Bangkok from eight cities in US and Canada, via Taipei

“This MOU will help us to target tourists from the Americas – one of our most important and fastest growing markets,” explained TAT governor, Yuthasak Supasorn. “EVA Air is a vital link between North America and Asia as there are currently no direct flights from the USA and Canada to Thailand. By working with EVA Air on tourism initiatives, we can help get word out about Thailand’s attractions and boost visitor numbers even more in 2017 and beyond.”

Following the signing of the MOU, EVA and the TAT will engage in a ‘Project Implementation Workshop’ to discuss and finalise details of the collaboration.

EVA currently operates 80 weekly flights per week between Taiwan and eight North American cities: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Vancouver, New York, Toronto, Houston and Chicago. They can then connect to any of EVA’s 26 weekly flights between Taipei and Bangkok. EVA noted that about half the passengers in its Taipei-Bangkok flights are from North America and Europe.

From January to November 2016, Thailand welcomed a total of 859,838 travellers came from the US and 216,768 from Canada, up 12.3% and 7.3% respectively.
