The number of visitors to Cambodia’s Angkor Wat temple complex exceeded two million in 2016.
Figures from the park’s state-run ticketing company, Angkor Institution, revealed that a total of 2.19 million tickets for the UNESCO World Heritage site were sold last year, marking a 4.2% increase compared to 2015.
In total, the attraction generated US$63.6 million in sales revenues.
The management of Angkor’s ticking operations was transferred back to the government in 2015, having been operated by Sokimex, the Cambodian conglomerate, since 1999.
Since taking over, the Angkor Institution has announced plans to almost double the price of single-day passes for international visitors, as well as hiking the fees for multi-day tickets. The new charges will come into force on 1 February 2017.
