Accor has unveiled a major expansion plan in Malaysia, where it intends to more than double its portfolio to 20 hotels by the end of 2015.

The European hotelier unveiled its plans in Malaysia this week, with announcements for an additional 12 properties in the country, comprising more than 2,600 rooms. This will see the Accor’s collection of hotels increase from eight properties comprising 2,520 rooms today to 20 hotels with more than 5,000 rooms by 2015.

“Accor sees Malaysia as one of the top tourism destinations in Southeast Asia,” said Gerard Guillouet, Accor’s senior vice president for Malaysia, Indonesia & Singapore.

“The country is full of potential and has plenty of room for us to grow. We are focusing our energy to develop more hotels in the country across all market segments. With the strong support from our hotel owners, tourism authorities and local communities, we are excited and optimistic about the future prospects for our hotels in Malaysia.

“This momentum of new hotel openings will lead the Group to achieve our target of 20 hotels by 2015, creating jobs opportunities and economic benefits for the communities surrounding the hotels. It will allow us to become one of the leaders transforming the country’s hospitality industry into the future,” he added.

The 12 new Accor hotels in Malaysia will span a range of brands, with six ibis properties, four Mercures and two Novotels. These will add to the existing three ibis, two Novotel and three Pullman hotels operating in the country.

The new properties will also cover a range of different destinations, with debut hotels in Melaka, Taiping, Tawau, Sandakan and Selangor, as well as extra hotels in Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu.

“The mix of hotel segments in our pipeline indicates that we will continue to have a well-balanced network in 2015 with 15% of the hotels being upscale, 40% midscale, and 45% being economy hotels,” said Guillouet.

“The network will also be geographically balanced, with hotels in strategic business and leisure destinations throughout the country. Our long-term strategy has been to emphasise development in central Malaysia first, eventually expanding into other regions, including Penang, Perak, Selangor, Melaka, Johor, Sabah and Sarawak.”

The expansion has already commenced this year with the opening of the ibis Styles Ipoh, and will continue with the launch of the ibis Styles Sandakan Waterfront and Mercure Kota Kinabalu Metro Town in 2014.

Then 2015 will see the launch of the ibis Styles Selangor Sri Damansara, ibis Styles Melaka, ibis Styles Lahad Datu, ibis Styles Kota Kinabalu Inanam, ibis Kuala Lumpur City Centre, Mercure Selangor Selayang, Mercure Kuala Lumpur Shaw Parade, Mercure Kota Kinabalu City Centre, Novotel Perak Taiping and Novotel Melaka.
