American Airlines has placed a huge order for up to 220 new regional jets.
The airline, which recently merged with US Airways, has agreed to buy 30 Bombardier CRJ900 aircraft and 60 Embraer E175 jets, with options for a further 40 Bombardiers and 90 Embraers.
“It’s been an exciting week for American Airlines,” said Kenji Hashimoto, the company’s senior vice president of regional carriers. “Now that we’ve closed our merger with US Airways, we can deliver a top-tier regional product that offers a first class cabin, main cabin extra and in-flight Wi-Fi – important elements of an improved flying experience for our customers. These new regional jets are also a big win for our employees at our regional subsidiary, and will greatly improve economic efficiencies by lowering operating costs.
The Bombardier CRJ900s will have 76 seats – 12 in first class, 32 in the premium economy-style main cabin extra, and 32 in economy. The new aircraft will be operated by PSA Airlines on behalf of American, with deliveries expected to start in the second quarter of 2014.
The Embraer E175s meanwhile, will also feature 76 seats – 12 in first class, 20 in premium economy and 44 in economy. Deliveries will start on the first quarter of 2015, with all aircraft to be operated by American Eagle.
The new aircraft will replace American’s existing regional fleet of smaller 50-seat regional aircraft, which are scheduled for retirement.
