American Airlines has unveiled the launch schedule for its new fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners, including the inaugural international service to Beijing.
The world’s largest airline took delivery of its first Dreamliner this month, a B787-8, and the new twin-aisle jet will initially enter service on 7 May 2015, serving the domestic Dallas–Chicago route.
Then in June American will deploy the B787 on international routes for the first time. The Dallas-Beijing route will be operated by the Dreamliner from 2 June, with the Dallas-Buenos Aires route following on 4 June. More routes will be added later in the year as the airline takes delivery of more B787s.
“We look forward to welcoming our international customers onboard the 787 with its modern amenities and comforts beginning this summer,” said Andrew Nocella, American’s chief marketing officer.
“Adding the 787 Dreamliner to our network gives us the opportunity to increase our efficiency on long-haul flights across the globe and potentially open up new markets in our network. It’s a big win for customers.”
American’s B787-8 comes equipped with 226 seats in three classes – business, premium economy and economy. The business class cabin features 28 flat-bed seats on a 1-2-1 configuration, while the 48 premium economy and 150 economy class seats are arranged in a 3-3-3 layout. All seats offer HD touch-screen in-flight entertainment, power outlets and USB ports.
The airline has placed firm orders for 42 B787 aircraft, including both standard B787-8s and larger B787-9s.
The new aircraft add to American’s existing fleet of approximately 630 aircraft, including more than 120 twin-aisle jets. As well as its new Dreamliners, American also has outstanding orders for 23 Airbus A350 aircraft, which are expected to enter service in 2017, plus more B777-300ERs.
