Asia carriers ‘considering’ Birmingham routes

China-based airlines are ‘carefully considering’ flying to and from Birmingham to bypass limited capacity at Heathrow, the airport has revealed.
Management at Birmingham Airport are said to have received positive feedback after a visit to Routes Asia and could see routes to China and Asia when its runway extension is completed in 2014. Paul Kehoe, CEO at the airport has now urged the government to endorse it in its policy review.
“We hear so much from BAA about the UK losing lucrative new routes because of the capacity constraints at Heathrow but the South East isn’t the only solution,” added Kehoe. “Our runway extension will allow aircraft to fly direct from China, bringing investment to the region, and giving airlines and passengers an alternative to battling with London’s congestion problems”.
The airport currently handles nine million passengers but could increase this to 36m by 2030 after the runway extension.
