Klook, the online platform for Asian attractions, tours and activities, is set for a significant expansion after it secured US$30 million of funding.

The investment, led by Sequoia Capital China, will help scale-up Klook’s operations as it spreads its reach globally. Founded in late 2014, Klook’s team of investors already includes some of the world’s leading venture capitalists. Existing investors including Matrix Partners and Welight Capital have also ramped up their funding.

“Scale advantage is a prominent element in the travel industry, especially within the highly fragmented in-destination sector,” said Neil Shen, founding and managing partner of Sequoia Capital China. “With combined strengths in transaction and community, Klook has become a proven leader in Asia. We’re happy to join the company on this exciting journey going forward.”

Klook’s platform currently covers over 80 popular destinations, mainly within Asia, providing more than 10,000 attractions, tours, and activities. It now has a team of over 200 staff based in eight Asian offices.

Following the investment, Klook said it plans to “broaden its scope of operations beyond Asia to meet the spending power and growing appetite of Asian travellers”.

“The company is confident that as travellers make more mid to long-haul journeys out of the region, there will be a significant demand to access everything a destination has to offer on one consolidated platform,” it said in a statement.

Klook is also developing a large collection of travel videos in the industry, including 360-degree and VR formats, and the new investment will also help expand this area of the business.
