Thailand’s night-time curfew has been lifted in more major tourist destinations.
The country’s military rulers, the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), revealed on Saturday that they would remove the midnight to 4am curfew in Hua Hin, Cha-am, Krabi and Phang-nga with immediate effect, following the recent lifting of restrictions in Phuket, Pattaya and Koh Samui.
Then on Sunday, the ruling was expanded to the Malaysian border city of Hat Yai and the eastern resort island of Koh Chang.
The NCPO has also granted “curfew exemption” to the island of Koh Phangan, allowing it to proceed with its famous Full Moon Parties, which are scheduled to be held from 9-13 June 2014.
“This curfew exemption for Ko Phangan’s Full Moon Party is not only great news for the tourists who come from all over the world to experience this unique gathering, but also for local tourism operators and hotels,” said Thawatchai Arunyik, governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).
“This latest development announced by the NCPO should help reassure everyone coming to this famous party that they will have a safe and memorable time.”
The lifting it the curfew in Krabi province will include the popular tourist islands of Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta, while Phang-nga province encompasses the resort area of Khao Lak.
Last week, Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism & Sports said it would ask the NCPO to lift the nationwide curfew at several more tourist areas. Most of these are covered by the recent rulings, but the northern city of Chiang Mai remains under the same restrictions as Bangkok.
