Dubai International Airport will become the world’s busiest civil aviation hub by next year, according to Dubai Airports chairman and chairman of Emirates Airline, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum.

Sheikh Ahmed said on Wednesday that the airport’s operator was also working to raise capacity to accommodate more Airbus A380 superjumbos for Emirates.

“We are going according to plan to accommodate all A380s,” Sheikh Ahmed told Bloomberg.

“Hopefully within one year from now we would be nDubai Airportumber one.”

The carrier currently has around 90 double-decker A380s on order while the airport opened a dedicated facility for the aircraft earlier this year.

Last year the airport noted a 13.2% year-on-year passenger traffic increase, making the hub the third busiest in the world, but it has long been the target to overtake Heathrow.

The UK hub is close to its capacity at just under 70 million passengers a year, while Dubai International is expected to accommodate 90 million by 2018.
