Plans to revolutionise transport on Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island have been unveiled by UAE-based Miral, the firm that describes itself as “the creator of destinations”.
The company, which has an ambitious strategy to introduce further developments on Yas, which is already deemed the UAE’s entertainment island, will soon offer computer-controlled “jet-like” vehicles to transport people from one attraction to the next.
Miral has signed a memorandum of understanding with US-based skyTran Inc, a NASA Space Act company, with a view to introducing a personal rapid transit system called skyTran, marking the concept’s Middle East debut.
The two-person elevated PRT system will be built at the NASA Ames Research Centre and will used magnetic levitation technology instead of wheels. It will see two-person pods zipping along in the air.
The transport system will eventually link to Abu Dhabi International Airport.
Mohamed Abdulla Al Zaabi, CEO of Miral, said: “Innovation remains at the heart of what we do on Yas Island. While we continue to build world-class destinations and expand Yas Island, it is imperative that we are able to implement an urban transportation solution which is not only energy efficient but also adds another level of excitement to our visitors’ experiences.
Yas Island currently attracts more than 25 million visitors every year to attractions that include Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, Yas Waterworld, and the Yas Marina Formula 1 circuit. With the opening of the US$1 billion Warner Bros theme park in 2018, visitor numbers are expected to top 30 million.
