Novotel Christchurch Cathedral Square opened its doors today (Monday 19 August), becoming Accor’s second property to reopen in the New Zealand city since the February 2011 earthquake.
The revamped 13-storey property joins the ibis Christchurch in the city, adding 154 more rooms to the citywide inventory. It also features a gym, dining and conference facilities, as well as offering views of Christchurch Cathedral, which was also damaged by the quake.
And the hotel’s GM, Carl Braddock, said that the reopening of the Novotel marks another significant step in the recovery of the city’s tourism industry.
“After working countless hours and [owning company] Host Hotels & Resorts investing more than NZ$20 million (US$16m) to bring the hotel back to its former glory, we are totally over the moon to welcome back the first guests to Novotel Christchurch,” said Braddock.
“We are confident that locals and our guests will be proud of what has been achieved over the last two years and bookings are already streaming in. We aim to have the heart of Christchurch beating strongly again in no time and help accelerate the city’s central business district and tourism industry recovery,” he added.
Novotel Christchurch Cathedral Square will have an official opening ceremony on 4 September 2013, the anniversary of the first Christchurch earthquake.
