Phuket was the most searched-for international destination by Chinese travellers during this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival, which ran from 6-8 September 2014.

According to data released by the Chinese International Travel Monitor (CITM), the Thai resort destination topped the list of online destination searches during this peak travel period. And regional travel continues to be most popular, with nine of the 10 most searched destinations being located in Asia.

After Phuket, Seoul was second and Taipei third. The Thai capital Bangkok also made the top 10, coming in at seventh place.

“This great news also comes at an opportune time when Thailand is now offering a tourist visa fee waiver for holders of Chinese and Chinese Taipei passports,” said Thawatchai Arunyik, governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

“Chinese travellers planning to visit Thailand during this three-month period can make use of this wonderful scheme to come to enjoy a wide variety of tourist attractions, famous Thai food and shopping opportunities, especially in Phuket.”

The CITM report also revealed the most popular activities for Chinese tourists visiting Thailand. Visiting famous tourist attractions (73%) was top, followed by eating famous local dishes (64%) and shopping (56%). In terms of spending however, shopping accounted for 53% of Chinese travellers’ total travel budget.
