SilkAir is planning a series of new passenger offerings in 2014, including in-flight entertainment (IFE) and connections to more Southeast Asian destinations.

The Singapore-based carrier has commenced trials of a wireless IFE system, which will enable passengers to stream movies, TV programmes and music on to their laptops, tablets and smartphones. The trial will be conducted using Panasonic’s eXW Wireless solution aboard one of SilkAir’s Airbus A320 aircraft.

“This initiative was introduced based on feedback from customers who wanted access to more in-flight entertainment options on our flights. Upon successful trial, we look forward to introducing this system across our aircraft fleet by next year, providing customers with the complete SilkAir experience,” said the airline’s chief executive, Leslie Thng.

Meanwhile, SilkAir has also announced plans to launch flights to two new Southeast Asian destinations in 2014 – Kalibo, the gateway to the Philippine resort island of Boracay, and Myanmar’s second largest city Mandalay.

Commencing on 27 May, the airline will operate three weekly services to Kalibo, as an extension of its Singapore-Cebu route. SilkAir will operate the circular Singapore-Cebu-Kalibo-Singapore route every Thursday, and Singapore-Kalibo-Cebu-Singapore on Tuesdays and Sundays.

Then on 10 June, SilkAir will extend its existing Yangon service to Mandalay, with the new Singapore-Yangon-Mandalay-Singapore circular route operating every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

“As the regional wing of Singapore Airlines, SilkAir plays a role to extend the Singapore Airlines Group network by seeding and developing emerging destinations. We are excited to be adding both Kalibo and Mandalay to our network and are confident that they will be well received,” Thng added.

The two new services will operate on a seasonal basis in summer 2014. During this period, SilkAir will also add extra flights to several destinations, including Medan, Pekanbaru, Hyderabad, Kochi and Visakhapatnam. It will reduce services however, to Phuket, Palembang, Balikpapan and Darwin.
