SilkAir, the regional subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, has launched a new wireless in-flight entertainment system, SilkAir Studio.
The new service will allow passengers to stream a selection of content to their laptops, tablets or smartphones, including movies, TV shows and music.
Users do not need to download a separate mobile app prior to boarding, and the content will be offered free-of-charge to passengers in all classes. For flights with a duration of more than two hours, SilkAir will offer tablets to business class passengers.
“Following the introduction of our new Boeing fleet in February, we are excited to introduce this new wireless in-flight entertainment system, SilkAir Studio, to our customers,” said SilkAir’s chief executive, Leslie Thng. “It is a service that will give passengers an innovative new way to enjoy entertainment content in the air, using personal devices of their choice to enjoy the latest… programming from our SilkAir library.
“We have always strived to provide enjoyable experiences, and we are confident that SilkAir Studio will help us to continue delivering on this promise,” he added.
The launch of this new system follows a trial conducted on one of SilkAir’s aircraft in December 2013. The airline said that feedback from the trial was “generally very positive, with stable technical performance”.
In total, SilkAir Studio will offer up to 20 Hollywood and international movies, 26 short features and up to 100 music albums, with content being refreshed on a regular basis.
SilkAir said it will continue to offer in-flight entertainment on overhead screens for passengers travelling without electronic devices.
