British holidaymakers are getting more for their money while abroad with the strong pound making prices 80% cheaper than a year ago.
The pound’s increased buying power will make prices in resorts cheaper than usual, with Copenhagen seeing the biggest drop of almost 30%.
A new barometer from the Post Office Travel Money based on buying essential items found Eastern European cities to be the cheapest due to the pound but also low hotel prices.
The Hungarian capital of Budapest came out cheapest for a list of 12 items including an evening meal for two with wine, drinks, two nights’ accommodation and city transport.
The cost for Budapest cost GBP117, while Lithuania’s Vilnius was close behind with GBP118 and Warsaw at GBP132.
In the Eurozone Lisbon came out the best buy with prices at GBP137, while Amsterdam and Paris were amongst the priciest at GBP310 and GBP311 respectively.
Andrew Brown of Post Office Travel Money said: “Meals and drinks are rarely included in city break packages so it is important to check prices before booking. Over a weekend break we found that tourists could pay four times as much for meals and drinks in Copenhagen as they would in Prague. We also found that a meal for two with wine in Prague cost £22, less than half the price charged in 17 other cities across Europe.”
Outside of Europe those travelling to Istanbul will receive 36% more Turkish lira for their pounds and 29% more Russian rubles.
New York remains one of the more expensive cities at a GBP366 figure for the items, with prices falling for meal and accommodation, making it 11% cheaper than Boston (GBP413).
“The rising value of sterling is good news if you are planning a city break this spring but make sure you do your homework to get the best value. Cheap flights and accommodation will not necessarily give you the best deal overall,” said Brown.
