A Sebel-branded hotel in Sydney is being taken over by Rydges.

The management contract for the 271-room Sebel Surry Hills has been awarded to Rydges Hotels & Resorts, and the property will be rebranded as the Rydges Sydney Central from 7 April 2014.

Located in the centre of Australia’s biggest city, the upscale hotel features a swimming pool, restaurant, bar and spa. It also offers extensive conference and banqueting facilities, with nine meeting rooms catering for up to 220 delegates and a business centre. It has been operated by Sebel since 2008, including the last two years under the broader Accor banner.

Dr Jerry Schwartz, director of the hotel’s owning company, said the hotel would work well alongside his other Rydges-managed hotel, at nearby World Square.

“The two hotels will benefit from working more closely together, as both are large hotels with major conferencing facilities and a strong domestic market,” said Dr Schwartz.

“The change of name will also reflect the massive upgrade in the Central transport hub and the imminent construction of the Goods Line, which will link Central to Darling Harbour.”

The rebranding comes as Accor repositions the Sebel as a more apartment-style brand.
