Thailand’s military leaders have lifted the night-time curfew in three key resort areas, in a bid to ease pressure on the country’s tourism industry.
Visitors to Pattaya, Phuket and Koh Samui can now stay out after midnight, after the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) removed the midnight to 4am curfew. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) said it was happy with the decision.
“The lifting of the curfew in Pattaya, Phuket and Koh Samui is welcome news. This latest development announced by the NCPO should help reassure everyone coming for a holiday in Thailand that it’s very much business as usual and that there’s no reason for anyone to change their plans,” said TAT governor Thawatchai Arunyik.
The NCPO said it will now review the curfew on a case-by-case basis. This mean that other tourist areas such as Hua Hin and Krabi could follow suit in the near future, although do decision or timeline has yet been announced.
“The recent political situation only affected a few small areas of Bangkok, while in the rest of the country daily life was not disrupted at all. There is no military presence in popular tourist areas and of course no danger to travellers going out of their hotels and guesthouses in the evening,” Thawatchai added.
The nationwide curfew was initially imposed from 10pm to 5am following the start of military rule, but was later eased to midnight to 4am.
