Singapore Airlines (SIA) will launch flights to Myanmar on 28 October 2012.
The airline’s regional subsidiary SilkAir currently offers 16 weekly flights between Singapore and Yangon, but next month SIA will take over seven of these, upgrading them to a 323-seat Boeing 777-200 aircraft. Silkair will continue flying nine weekly flights to Yangon, meaning the group will still offer a total of 16 weekly services on the route.
“Demand has been growing strongly for both business and leisure travel to Myanmar, and Singapore Airlines looks forward to serving the country for the first time,” said SIA’s Executive Vice President of Commercial, Mak Swee Wah, who is also Chairman of SilkAir.
“SIA and SilkAir are constantly looking at new market opportunities and the launch of SIA services enables us to quickly meet the growing demand for travel to this increasingly popular destination.”
A series of airlines have expressed interest in relaunching flights to Myanmar since the country started opening up. Among these, ANA, EVA Air, Qatar Airways and AirAsia have already confirmed new or additional services to the country.
