Hong Kong and Taiwan have joined forces to entice more travellers to visit both destinations in the same trip.

The tourism boards of the two destinations, the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) and the Taiwan Tourism Bureau (TTB), have formed a new partnership that will target the US outbound market, with the aim of attracting more American leisure travellers to Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The US is the largest long-haul visitor source market for both Hong Kong and Taiwan, and these trans-Pacific ties are being enhanced by a series of new flights between the US and both Hong Kong and Taiwan. Currently there are more than 200 weekly flight connections between the US and Taiwan/Hong Kong, and this is expected to increase 6.5% in 2016.

Building on this momentum, the new multi-destination initiative will aim to persuade American travellers to visit both destinations in a single trip. The two markets are linked by more than 60 daily flights.

“According to our survey, 92% of visitors from the US arriving in Hong Kong would like to visit other destinations on the same trip,” said HKTB’s executive director, Anthony Lau. “The trend of multi-destination travel in Asia has been gaining importance in recent years, as tourists want to get the most out of each trip. We are confident that this cooperation between Hong Kong and Taiwan will help draw more visitors to Asia and drive our mutual business.”

TTB’s deputy director-general, Dr Wayne Liu, commented; “Data shows that in recent years the US arrivals [have] been increasing steadily, and the growth was the fastest among all long haul markets in the last year. This suggests that travelling to Taiwan has already sparked interest among American tourists.

“With the increasing of direct flights between US, Taiwan and Hong Kong, we believe by joining hands with Hong Kong, promoting a full Asia experience in one single trip, could attract more American visitors. We are confident that this would soon become their top choice for travel to Asia,” he added.

The two tourist boards said they want to focus on the “east-meets-west culture” of Hong Kong, along with the city’s “world class culinary scene”. Taiwan’s “superb local food and living culture” will be highlighted in the promotions.

“The setting, lifestyle and food culture of Hong Kong and Taiwan are complementary to each other and fascinate many visitors,” they added.
