Star Cruises’ flagship cruise liner, SuperStar Virgo, returned to Hong Kong today (8 April 2014).

The 75,338-tonne, 13-deck ship will homeport in the city from now until 26 October 2014, offering a series of cruises to destinations in Taiwan, China and Vietnam.

The SuperStar Virgo docked at Hong Kong’s Ocean Terminal on Tuesday morning, carrying 1,600 passengers on a voyage from Nha Trang. The vessel was welcomed by several local officials including Hong Kong’s tourism commissioner, Philip Yung, and the executive director of the Hong Kong Tourism Board, Anthony Lau.

The arrival marks the ship’s first Hong Kong homeport season for six years.

“SuperStar Virgo is an immensely popular cruise ship,” said Genting Hong Kong’s chief operating officer, Blondel So. “Many tourists from China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Australia, as well as Southeast Asia and India, are flying to Hong Kong to take advantage of this opportunity and have a chance to explore the city.

“This deployment also serves as a prelude to the two 150,000-tonne mega-cruise ships we have recently commissioned to build for the Asian market. It will pave the way for their respective deliveries in 2016 and 2017,” he added.

SuperStar Virgo will set sail for Kaohsiung tonight on a three-day voyage. During the six-month deployment, the ship will offer weekly four-day cruises to Kaohsiung and Taichung, four-day voyages to Sanya and Halong Bay and one-night cruises around the South China Sea. Once a month, the ship will embark on seven-day cruises to Taiwan’s three biggest cities – Taipei, Kaohsiung and Taichung.
