The airport on South Australia’s Kangaroo Island will get a long-awaited upgrade, enabling the launch of direct flights from Sydney and Melbourne.
Once completed, the upgraded airport is expected to bring more than 30,000 additional visitors to the island, and inject almost AU$30 million (US$22m) into the island’s economy within five years.
“This upgrade will be a game changer for Kangaroo Island and will boost visitor numbers and unlock huge opportunities for the island,” said Rodney Harrex, chief executive of the South Australian Tourism Commission.
“We have an ambitious goal of reaching AU$8 billion in tourism expenditure by 2020 and these large scale infrastructure upgrades will play an important role in delivering that target.”
The project, which will be backed by AU$9m in government funds, will include the extension of the airport’s runway and the development of a larger terminal.
Currently, Kangaroo Island’s airport only handles flights from Adelaide.
