Today is expected to be the busiest day for holiday bookings as many get back to the daily grind of work.

British Airways Holidays has dubbed today ‘Bumper Holiday Monday’ with more summer trips predicted to be booked today than any other time of the year.

Research by the airline found a third of Brits did not take a holiday in 2013 mainly due to the costs, while the average worker has five unused days of holiday.

It has already seen the number of holidays booked on Christmas Day more than double and saw a 62% rise on Boxing Day.

Top destinations so far have included Orlando, Barbados, Las Vegas, Barcelona and Dubai.

Thomson and First Choice have also reported strong bookings for the Christmas period, with sales up 10% on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Bookings have nearly doubled on tablets, while mobile bookings are up 61% year-on-year.

“Our January sale began early again this year [2013], on 20 December, and it seems once again the bad weather has prompted more Brits to look for an escape to the sunshine,” said Jeremy Ellis, marketing and digital director at Thomson and First Choice.

Globally holidaymakers are expected to pay more for hotel nights this year, with rates increasing throughout the 2013 months.

Transactions crunched by Pegasus Solutions found leisure bookings to go up 1.9% in November while rates in the Christmas holiday period went up around 4%.

Travellers will also get 28% more travel cash than last year thanks to a stronger sterling, with Egypt coming up as both a good currency conversion and cost option as the country attempts to revive its tourism.
