British Airways has started revamping its fleet of Boeing 747 aircraft.

The airline has earmarked a total of 18 B747-400s for an interior makeover, with six having already been completed. The long-haul jets are being equipped with interiors similar to the airline’s new Airbus A380s.

Each four-cabin plane is being fitted with an additional 16 business class seats, bringing the total number of flat beds on each plane to 86. New seats are being installed in economy and premium economy, while new carpets and curtains are being rolled out throughout the aircraft, along with mood lighting in every cabin.

Each aircraft is also being fitted with Panasonic’s new eX3 in-flight entertainment system, which provides more than 1,300 hours of content including 130 movies and 400 TV programmes on larger, high-resolution screens. Premium economy seats will have power socket and USB ports, while economy class seats will feature USB ports.

“We know our customers appreciate the investment we are making in new aircraft and refurbishing our much loved Boeing 747s is also helping to make flying with British Airways an even more enjoyable and relaxing experience,” said Troy Warfield, BA’s director of customer experience.

“The feedback from customers on our refurbished 747s has been extremely positive, as they are able to enjoy more comfortable seats, a better flying environment and the very latest state-of-the art in-flight entertainment.”

The sixth revamped B747  entered service recently, along with BA’s 11th A380 and sixth B787-9 Dreamliner. BA is also due to take delivery of its first Airbus A350 in 2018, with 18 aircraft on order.

The B747s currently operate services from London Heathrow to New York JFK, Chicago, Lagos, Dubai, Boston, Riyadh, Kuwait and Riyadh, with more destinations to be added for the summer 2016 season.
