British Airways is to bump up its flights to Rio de Janeiro in time to capture traffic for the World Cup next year.

The airline will fly daily from Heathrow to Rio from 28 October onboard a Boeing 777-300ER with a four-cabin configuration.

The extra weekly flight will not be in place in time for the FIFA Confederations Cup this June but will take World Cup fans in 2014 and Olympics in 2016 if it continues.

The news will come as a welcome to tourism authorities in Brazil after its latest visitor figures showed a record year for British people travelling to the country.

Around 4% more Brits visited Brazil in 2012 up to 155, 548 with the numbers set to increase with the sporting events in the next three years.

“The latest tourism figures signify that momentum is growing ahead of our upcoming mega events and we are on track to meet our goal of 10 million visitors by 2020 [2012: 5.4m],” said Flavio Dino, President of Embratur.

To accommodate the influx of visitors hotel development has been boosted in the 12 host cities, with 109 hotels, resorts and hostels currently under construction.
