Heathrow Airport temporarily closed both its runways earlier today after a British Airways flight had to make an emergency landing.
The airport’s south runway has now re-opened but its northern runway remains closed following what BA called a “technical fault” on an Airbus A319 heading to Oslo.
All passengers and crew were evacuated safely from the aircraft at 9am this morning and no injuries were reported.
London Fire Brigade has tweeted a crew had been sent to the airport to put out a fire, which is now out.
British Airways said in a statement: “The BA762, Heathrow to Oslo service, returned back to Heathrow shortly after take-off due to a technical fault. The Airbus A319 aircraft was carrying 75 customers. The aircraft landed safely and emergency slides were deployed and we are currently caring for our customers. We will be carrying out a full investigation into the incident.”
Delays are expected at the airport today.
“Our airside team is working with the emergency services to re-open the northern runway as quickly as possible. The temporary closure is likely to result in a number of cancelled flights throughout the day and passengers are advised to check the status of their flight with their airline before travelling to the airport,” said Heathrow Airport in a statement.
