Flights to and from Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport recommenced yesterday after a fire previously closed the airport.
Kenya Airways’ services from the airport to Mombasa restarted last night with its Paris CDG service landing in late in the evening.
Its London flights to Nairobi are expected to operate as usual today. Passengers will be processed through the domestic terminal and must have previously purchased a ticket. A ticketing service will not be available for flights today.
British Airways has cancelled its flights to the airport today and is offering passengers to delay their trip or switch to another destination if travelling to Nairobi up to Sunday 11 August.
In a Facebook post Kenya Airways said none of its aircraft were damaged in the fire, although staff and a passenger suffered from smoke inhalation and have been taken to hospital.
The fire in the airport, which is the largest in the east Africa region, is now under control but raged for hours and has now destroyed the international arrivals area. No injuries were reported and inbound flights were diverted to Mombasa.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
Tour operators start on alternatives
UK tour operators were quick to begin rearranging travel plans for clients hit by the airport’s closure. Andrew Dunn, chairman of Scott Dunn said the company was also working on the ground in Kenya to help those who were due to fly back to the UK.
Hoteliers are hoping the airport reopens soon while clients are redirected to other airports in the meantime.
Mikey Carr-Hartley, owner of The Safari Collection said: “We are waiting for more information from the airlines and the tour operators that we work with to find out what the alternative options are. We would hope that the airport teams can get the airport up and running again as soon as possible as none of us wish to have guests travelling hundreds of miles by road to alternative airports such as Dar es Salaam. We are completely full at this time of year so are doing everything we can to ensure our guests have a smooth journey.”
